Fun Fact: Shrikes are carnivorous birds comprised of 33 species. The family name Lanius comes from the Latin word for butcher. Sometimes shrikes are referred to as butcherbirds because of their feeding behavior. They are known to catch insects and small vertebrates and tear them apart on thorns or man-made spikes. Loggerhead and Northern shrikes are the only variety that are found in North America.
