Levee

Shawn McNulty
Acrylic and Pumice on Canvas
36×36″
2016

Levee is an original green abstract painting on canvas by visual artist Shawn McNulty. This painting is is 1.5″ deep, gallery wrapped with painted edges, and ready to hang with wire on the back.

Fun Fact: A levee, as you probably know, is an embankment a long a waterway which is typically built to prevent overflow. I used it as a title for this painting because it feels like the energy is about to overflow, and the levee (orange area) is starting to break. I always see a winged figurative form on the right side. The small touches of pink really complete this artwork. The song When the Levee Breaks was released by Led Zeppelin on their untitled fourth album in 1971. It’s a reworking of a blues song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. My cousin owns this painting, and here is the cool view that it has from his apartment in New Jersey.
