Fun Fact: Murano is a commission I completed for a collector in 2019. Murano is a group of islands connected by bridges in northern Italy. Murano’s legacy as a glassmaking hub happened because the Venetian Republic ordered glassmakers to move their furnaces to Murano in 1291. There was an impending threat of fire, and they were concerned about the city’s wooden buildings. Murano glass is still grouped in with Venetian glass. Murano’s glassmakers were considered among the island’s most prominent citizens, and the tradition has never slowed down with future generations. Today, Murano and Venice are tourist hot spots, and Murano is home to several glass factories and glass artists’ studios.
