Miami Art Basel 2013 is upon us once again and two artists with notable exhibitions worth checking out are Lucy Dodd and Tracey Emin. Lucy Dodd is an artist based out of New York City. She recently had an exhibition, “Foss,” at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles this past summer which was sparked by seeing a stain in a Tide commercial during the Superbowl, but is primarily represented by the David Lewis Gallery in New York City. She really stretches the concept of “mixed media” incorporating a wide variety of goodies including leaf extract, wild walnut, yew berries, liquid smoke, flower essence, black lichen, saliva, iron oxide, charcoal, and dog urine. Yowza, I’m guessing some pieces could even be classified as USDA Organic. These earthly works feel like they could have been pulled from being buried deep in the ground, and I see a Native American influence in the process and materials. Also, she and her friends served “joy juice” derived from urban moonshine out of edible cucumber cups at her Basel exhibition. Good times.
Tracey Emin is an English artist that works in a number of media, including needlework, drawings, sculpture, film-making, animation and installations. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami will host the first-ever exhibition to focus mainly on Emin’s use of neon during Art Basel beginning with her iconic The Tracey Emin Museum (1995) which will open the show. The exhibition will explore how Emin’s neon installations play an essential role in the development of her work, marking a shift from her early diaristic and confessional style to a more cryptic, multifaceted form of expression. The sleek cursive design and bold color choices of the lettering in these pieces are really striking, and a perfect fit to the overall vibe of the Miami Beach Art Fair. Emin was recently appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2013 New Year Honors for services to the arts.
